Recovery rarely starts on a calm day. It usually starts in a moment of fear, exhaustion, or a quiet decision that something has to change. This page brings together the resources we point families to most often: where to call right now, what to do in a crisis, how to support a loved one, and how to begin outpatient care with The Archangel Centers.
If you or someone you love is in immediate danger, call 911. The lines below are free, confidential, and available to anyone, whether or not you ever become our patient.
National hotlines and helplines
These are current, free, and confidential national resources. You do not need insurance, an appointment, or a diagnosis to use them.
- 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline: call or text 988, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for anyone in suicidal crisis or emotional distress.
- SAMHSA National Helpline: 1-800-662-4357 (1-800-662-HELP), a free, confidential, 24/7 treatment referral and information service for mental health and substance use, in English and Spanish.
- SAMHSA Treatment Locator: search findtreatment.gov to find licensed treatment programs by location and level of care.
- Veterans Crisis Line: dial 988 then press 1, or text 838255, for veterans and their families.
What to do in a crisis
A crisis can look like an overdose, suicidal thoughts, a severe panic or mental health episode, or a relapse that feels out of control. Knowing the steps ahead of time helps you act instead of freeze.
If there is any risk to life, call 911 first. If the situation is urgent but not immediately life-threatening, the 988 line and the SAMHSA National Helpline can talk you through next steps and connect you with care.
- For a suspected overdose, call 911 immediately and administer naloxone (Narcan) if it is available and you are trained to use it.
- Stay with the person, keep them safe, and remove access to means of harm where possible.
- Write down what is happening and any substances involved so you can share accurate information with responders or clinicians.
- Once the immediate danger has passed, call us so we can help coordinate the right next level of care.
Resources for families
Addiction and mental health conditions affect the whole household, not just the person in treatment. Family members often carry stress, guilt, and uncertainty for years. Support for you is not optional, it is part of recovery.
We encourage families to learn the basics of the condition, set healthy boundaries, and find peer support. Free, established family programs include Al-Anon and Nar-Anon family groups, and SMART Recovery Family and Friends.
- Learn what a realistic recovery timeline looks like so your expectations match the work.
- Protect your own health with sleep, support, and outside help when you need it.
- Ask about family sessions and education when your loved one enters our programs.
How to start outpatient care with us
The Archangel Centers provides outpatient treatment, including partial hospitalization (PHP), intensive outpatient (IOP), and standard outpatient (OP), in Tinton Falls, New Jersey, with a Charlotte, North Carolina location joining the network. We do not provide medical detox or inpatient rehab on-site. When a higher level of care is needed first, we help coordinate safe placement and then welcome you into outpatient care.
Getting started is simple. Reach out, complete a confidential assessment, verify your insurance, and we will recommend the right level of care for your situation.
