Levels of Care Explained

What Is PHP?

A Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is the most intensive level of outpatient addiction and mental health treatment. It delivers structured, daily clinical care, roughly 25 to 30 hours each week, without requiring an overnight stay. Under the ASAM Criteria, the levels-of-care framework published by the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), PHP sits at Level 2.5, positioned just below residential care and one step above an Intensive Outpatient Program. Many people refer to PHP simply as day treatment. At The Archangel Centers, PHP gives people the therapeutic intensity of an inpatient setting while allowing them to return home or to recovery housing each evening to begin applying new skills in real life.

How a Partial Hospitalization Program works

PHP runs five to six days a week, roughly five to six hours a day. That schedule concentrates a full clinical curriculum into structured daytime hours, then releases each person back to their own environment overnight. The model is built on a simple idea: people recover faster when they practice new coping skills in the same setting where they will use them long term.

Because PHP is outpatient, a clinical assessment always confirms that a person is medically stable enough for this level. People who need around-the-clock medical monitoring or supervised withdrawal are first placed in detox or inpatient care, which The Archangel Centers coordinates rather than provides on site.

Who a PHP is right for

PHP is designed for people who are medically stable but still need a high level of daily clinical structure. A clinical evaluation determines whether this is the correct starting point, and the level of care can be stepped up or down as needs change.

  • People stepping down from detox or inpatient care who are not yet ready for a less intensive track
  • Individuals with moderate to severe substance use disorders who have safe, stable housing
  • People with co-occurring mental health conditions that call for daily psychiatric oversight
  • Anyone who has relapsed at a lower level of care and needs to re-engage with more support
  • People whose insurance authorizes outpatient-level rather than residential treatment

What a typical PHP day includes

PHP days are intentionally full. The schedule blends individual therapy, group work, and skills education so each person leaves treatment with a complete recovery toolkit.

  • Morning check-in and a grounding mindfulness practice
  • Individual therapy two to three times per week
  • Daily process and psychoeducation groups
  • Psychiatric services, including medication management
  • Family programming and family therapy
  • Relapse-prevention planning, case management, and discharge coordination

Therapies used in PHP

PHP layers several evidence-based modalities so care matches each person's clinical picture rather than a one-size-fits-all template.

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
  • Motivational interviewing and trauma-focused approaches
  • Group therapy that builds peer accountability
  • Medication management and psychiatric consultation
  • Holistic supports such as mindfulness and life-skills work where clinically appropriate

Common questions

What is the difference between PHP and inpatient or residential treatment?

Inpatient and residential treatment provide round-the-clock on-site supervision, with people living at the facility. PHP delivers similar daily clinical programming but lets people return to their own home or recovery residence each evening. That offers comparable therapeutic intensity with more autonomy. The Archangel Centers provides outpatient care, including PHP, and coordinates inpatient or residential placement when a higher level is needed.

How long does a PHP usually last?

Most people spend about four to six weeks in PHP, though the exact length depends on clinical progress, treatment goals, co-occurring conditions, and insurance authorization. Clinical teams reassess regularly and adjust the plan. Many people step down from PHP into an Intensive Outpatient Program to keep care continuous.

Can I keep working while in a PHP?

PHP requires attendance five to six days a week during daytime hours, so most people cannot maintain full-time work during this phase. Some with flexible or part-time schedules adjust, and many return to work after stepping down to a less intensive level such as IOP.

Does insurance cover a Partial Hospitalization Program?

Most major insurance plans, including the Blue Cross Blue Shield plans common in New Jersey and North Carolina, cover PHP when it is medically necessary. Coverage depends on your specific policy and authorization. Our admissions team verifies your benefits before you start and explains any out-of-pocket costs, so the financial picture is clear up front.

Where can I attend PHP through The Archangel Centers?

The Archangel Centers operates a Partial Hospitalization Program at our Tinton Falls, New Jersey location, with Charlotte, North Carolina coming soon. Because PHP meets during daytime hours five to six days a week, most people choose the location nearest their home or recovery housing to make the daily commute manageable throughout this phase.
